Who you are calling
Stone Mason in Bridgeport
A stone mason builds and repairs natural stone walls, steps, walkways and veneer, and that is the stone side of our work on residential and commercial properties across Bridgeport.
Concrete is poured into a form and brick and block come in even sizes. Stone does not: every piece is turned, chosen and fitted against the ones beside it and below it, so the wall or the step is only as good as the hands setting it. We build new stone work, take apart and reset stone that has moved, and quote the whole job before the first stone comes off the pallet.
Walls, Steps and Veneer
Stone masonry covers freestanding and retaining stone walls, stone steps, flagstone walkways and stone veneer, built new or rebuilt where the old stone has shifted.
Stone walls
Freestanding garden and boundary walls, and retaining walls that hold back a slope, laid dry or in mortar.
Stone steps
Thick stone treads set into a slope or up to a door, each one bedded so it sits solid underfoot.
Flagstone walkways
Flat flagstones laid as a path through the yard or up to the house, over a compacted gravel base.
Stone veneer
A face of natural stone set over a block or foundation wall, so it reads as solid stone without being one.
Two ways to lay a wall
Dry-Laid and Mortared Stone
A dry-laid wall stands on the fit and weight of its stones alone, while a mortared wall is bedded on a footing and its stones are joined with mortar.
Stone on stone
Dry-laid
- What holds it
- The fit of each stone against its neighbors and the weight of the stones above it.
- What it stands on
- A trench of compacted gravel that lets water drain out of the wall.
- The joints
- No mortar. Small stones chink the gaps and lock the larger ones in place.
- The look
- The loose, rough face of an old field wall.
Stone in mortar
Mortared
- What holds it
- Mortar joining every stone to the ones around it, so the wall acts as one piece.
- What it stands on
- A poured concrete footing set below the frost line.
- The joints
- Mortar packed between the stones and tooled to shed water.
- The look
- A tighter, more finished face, and the way steps and veneer are set.
Which one suits your yard comes down to what the wall has to do, how tall it stands and the look you want. We talk it through on site at the estimate.

How Stone Masonry Is Priced
The price of stone masonry is set by the size of the job, the access, the materials and the preparation it needs. Across the area, stone masonry typically runs $20 to $48 per sq ft.
- Size of the jobHow long and how tall the wall runs, how many steps, how much walk or wall face.
- AccessStone is heavy, and a yard a machine can reach goes quicker than one where every stone is carried in.
- MaterialsThe stone itself, and how closely new stone has to match what is already there.
- PreparationDigging out, the gravel base or the footing, and taking down old stone that has to be reset.

When the mortar goes
Repointing Old Stonework
Old stone walls and steps are saved by "repointing": the worn mortar between the stones is raked out and replaced, and the stone itself stays where it is.
Mortar is meant to wear before the stone does. Once it crumbles out of the joints, water gets into the wall, freezes and pushes the stones apart, and a loose cap stone or a rocking step tread is next. Caught at the joints, the wall is repointed rather than taken down and rebuilt. The trade also calls this "tuckpointing", the same renewal of the mortar between bricks or stones.
How a joint is renewed
- Rake outThe loose, worn mortar comes out of the joint, down to sound material.
- RepackFresh mortar is pressed back into the joint and packed tight against the stone.
- ToolThe joint is shaped so it sheds water instead of holding it.
For how mortar joints are meant to perform, the Brick Industry Association publishes the trade's technical guidance.
