Brick, block and stone

Masonry Contractors in Bridgeport

Masonry contractors build and repair the brick, block and stone on residential and commercial properties: walls, steps, chimneys and foundations.

That is the masonry side of what we do. Concrete is poured; masonry goes up a unit at a time, brick, block or stone laid in mortar, and it is the part of the house that carries the chimney through the roof, holds the stoop at the front door and keeps the ground out of the basement. When it cracks, leans or lets water in, we come out, look at what failed and why, and quote the whole repair before anything comes down.

Brick, Block and Stone Work

The work covers brick and block walls, steps and stoops, chimneys, block foundations and stone veneer, built new or rebuilt where the old work has failed.

  • Brick walls

House, garden and boundary walls laid in brick, built new or rebuilt where the courses have cracked or bowed.

  • Block walls

Concrete block laid in mortar on a poured footing, for garages, outbuildings and walls that hold back soil.

  • Steps and stoops

Front steps and stoops in brick, block or stone, rebuilt when the treads loosen or the stoop pulls away from the house.

  • Chimneys

Stacks repointed, or taken down to sound brick and laid back up above the roofline.

  • Block foundations

Cracked or leaking block foundation walls repaired before the damage reaches the house above them.

  • Stone veneer

Natural stone set as a face over block or a foundation wall, for the look of stone without a full stone wall.

When it starts to fail

Masonry Repair

Masonry repair replaces cracked brick and block and rebuilds the sections that are failing, before leaks and cracks undermine the structure behind them.

Cracks and leaks in a block foundation do not hold still: they keep growing until they undermine the house's structure, so the early repair is the smaller one. We cut out the broken brick or block, rebuild the section in new units and fresh mortar, and find the water or movement that caused it, so the repair is not the next thing to fail.

Tuckpointing Worn Mortar Joints

"Tuckpointing" grinds out the worn mortar between bricks or stones and packs new mortar in its place. The brick or stone stays where it is; only the joints are renewed.

  1. Grind out the worn joints
  2. Pack in new mortar
  3. Tool the joints to finish

For how mortar joints are meant to perform, the Brick Industry Association publishes the trade's technical guidance.

  • AccessA wall beside the walk goes quicker than a chimney above the roofline or a foundation behind a deck.
  • MaterialsBrick, block or stone, and how closely the new units have to match the old.
  • PreparationCutting out failed units, grinding joints and supporting what stands above before the new work goes in.
