Who pours it

Concrete Driveway Contractors in Bridgeport

We are the concrete driveway contractors who tear out failed driveways and pour new ones over a drained, compacted base, for residential and commercial properties across the city.

A driveway carries the weight of every car, every day, through every freeze, so what sits under it matters as much as the surface you see. The standard is reinforced concrete over a compacted gravel base that drains, graded so water runs off and away instead of sitting under the slab. That base is the part nobody sees once the concrete is down, and it is the first thing the estimate looks at.

Not every driveway needs replacing

Install, Replace or Repair

A new driveway is installed where there is none, a failing one is replaced, and one that is mostly sound is repaired or resurfaced.

  • New installation

Where there is no driveway yet, or a gravel one is ready for a hard surface, we lay it out, dig and compact the base, set the forms and pour it new.

  • Replacement

When the failure runs across the slab, broken, sunken or crumbling in more places than one, the driveway is beyond repair. It comes out in a full tear-out and a new one goes down.

  • Repair

When the slab is mostly sound, the damage is fixed in place: a polymer-based cement resurfacer over worn or "spalling" spots, the chipped and flaking surface, or a polyurethane sealant in the cracks.

From tear-out to sealer

How a Driveway Is Poured

A replacement runs in order: tear-out and grading, a compacted base, a 4,000 PSI mix, joints cut while the concrete is fresh, and a sealer once it has cured.

  1. Tear-out

The old driveway comes out in a full tear-out. Before any digging, buried lines are marked through Call Before You Dig, the state's one-call center.

  2. Grading and the base

The ground is graded and the "base course", the compacted gravel layer, goes in at the depth the excavation calls for, with the grade checked so the finished slab sheds water.

  3. Forms and reinforcement

Forms are set to the layout and the slope, and the reinforcement goes in inside them.

  4. The pour and the finish

The concrete is placed in the forms, screeded flat and given a "broom finish", the textured surface that gives tires and shoes their grip.

  5. Control joints

"Control joints", the cut lines across a driveway, go in while the concrete is still fresh, to about a quarter of the slab's depth, so it cracks along them and not across the middle.

  6. Cure and seal

The slab cures before it takes traffic, then gets its sealer. The mixing, placing, finishing and curing guides of the American Concrete Institute are what the trade works to.

How Concrete Driveway Installation Is Priced

The price of a concrete driveway is set by its size, the access to it, the materials and the preparation the ground needs.

$7 to $12

per square foot

Typical for a new concrete driveway in Bridgeport, in plain concrete without reinforcement and before any tear-out of an old one.

The exact figure for yours comes from the free estimate on site, and the written quote covers the whole job, with no surprise charges after.

What moves the price

  • SizeThe square footage of the driveway and the apron at the street.
  • ThicknessEach extra inch adds almost 50% to what the slab can carry and about 20% to the material cost.
  • Tear-outRemoving an old driveway is priced by the volume of concrete coming out, not its surface area.
  • AccessHow close the ready-mix truck can get to the forms.
  • Base preparationHow much digging, grading and gravel the ground needs before the pour.
  • FinishA plain broom finish costs less than stamped concrete with several colors and patterns.

The other option

Concrete or Asphalt

Asphalt costs less to install, while a concrete driveway lasts longer, needs less upkeep and gives you more finishes to choose from.

What we pour

Concrete

  • To installCosts more up front
  • LifespanLasts longer
  • UpkeepNeeds less of it
  • FinishesBroom, stamped, "exposed aggregate" or integral color

The alternative

Asphalt

  • To installCosts less up front
  • LifespanDoes not last as long
  • UpkeepNeeds more of it
  • FinishesFewer design choices

Either way, a new driveway can return 50–75% of its cost when the home is sold.

Width, Slope and the Street

Width, slope, garage access, the vehicles it carries, runoff, property lines and work near the street all shape a driveway before it is formed.

  • WidthAt least ten feet, and wider where cars park side by side.
  • SlopeEnough fall to carry water off the slab and away from the house.
  • Garage accessHow the driveway meets the garage slab and turns into it.
  • VehiclesWhat parks and turns on it, from a small car to a work truck.
  • RunoffWhere the water goes once it leaves the concrete.
  • Property linesWidening a driveway depends on property lines and easements.

Work near the street may carry extra requirements, so the apron at the curb is settled before anything is formed.

When to Drive on New Concrete

Keep cars off a new driveway for at least 5–7 days while the concrete gains its strength.

On an old driveway the warning runs the other way. Cracked, uneven or "spalling" concrete can damage tires and make an unsafe surface underfoot, and small defects left alone become safety problems.

A crack, a sunken edge or a lifted lip is easier to deal with while it is still small.
