Residential and commercial concrete
Concrete Contractors for New Haven Homes
From Wooster Square to Westville, a heaved sidewalk or a crumbling stoop shows what freezing ground does to old concrete. We pour it new and repair what is there, for the homes on those streets.

Concrete Contractors Nearby
We drive up from Bridgeport for residential and commercial concrete work across the city, and every job starts with a look at the slab and the ground under it before anything is priced.
New concrete goes down on a compacted "base course", the gravel layer that keeps a slab from settling, with forms and reinforcement set on top. "Control joints" are saw-cut the first day to about a quarter of the slab's depth, so the cracks the cold will try to open land in the cuts instead of across the middle.
Repair starts by reading the damage. Chipping, flaking, a sunken panel and a lifted one each come from something different and take a different fix, and you hear which one yours needs, whether it is a stoop in Beaver Hills or a storefront walk a few blocks from the Green.

The houses
Older Homes and Their Concrete
Half the homes here were built before 1952, so the walk, the front steps and the driveway beside most of them have been through decades of freezing winters.
That age reads the same on block after block in East Rock, Dixwell and Cedar Hill: panels lifted at the joints, stoops chipped at the nose, and old patches letting go at their edges. An old slab does not always need replacing. A sound one can be leveled, resurfaced or patched, and we tell you which before you pay for a tear-out.

The winters
Frost, Salt and Soil
Three things wear on outdoor concrete here: water that freezes in and under it, salt spread on top of it, and ground that shifts beneath it.
- FrostWater in the ground under a slab freezes and swells, pushing a panel up; when it thaws the slab settles back unevenly, and that is the lip you catch a toe on.
- SaltDe-icers cause "scaling", the pitted, sandy surface on walks and steps. Outdoor slabs that freeze are poured in "air-entrained concrete", the freeze-resistant mix, to stand up to it.
- SoilWhere the fill under a slab compacts or washes out, the slab is left over a hollow and sinks. "Void filling" packs that space so the sinking stops.
What the streets call for
Repair, Masonry and Leveling
Most work on older property in town falls under one of these, and each has its own page with the detail.

Concrete Repair for Cracked Walks
In neighborhoods like Fair Haven and the Hill, a crack or a broken edge is usually the first sign an old walk is giving out. We find what caused it before we patch, so the repair does not reopen along the same line.

Masonry Contractors for Steps and Walls
Historic districts such as Wooster Square and Prospect Hill hold a lot of brick steps, stone walls and aging mortar. When those crack, loosen or let water in, the fix is masonry: rebuilt steps, reset stone and repointed joints.

Concrete Leveling Instead of a Tear-Out
Only 28.4% of the city's occupied homes are lived in by their owners, so most walks and steps serve tenants every day. Raising a sunken slab can cost about half as much as replacing it, with less downtime and less damage to the yard.
